Springfield, Ohio – The Indiana Tech women’s tennis team began a new era on Saturday under the direction of first-year head coach Raquel Vescovi by defeating Indiana University East 6-3. The Warriors fell later in the day to Wittenberg University 5-0 in a weather shortened match.
In singles competition, the Warriors picked up wins at the top three spots against the Red Wolves. Freshman Ana Hernandez (Naucalpan, Mexico/ITESM CEM) won 6-0, 6-1, and sophomore Stephanie Perez (Queretaro, Mexico/Queretaro) won 6-1, 6-0. Junior Manuela Cabal (Cali, Columbia/Colegio Bolivar) also won in straight sets 6-3, 6-0.
Cabal and freshman Kayla Morrell (Lapeer, MI/Lapeer East) edged IU East’s Emily Underwood and Kristi Henderson at second doubles 8-6.
Up next, the Warriors faced off against host Wittenberg. Unfortunately, due to the weather the teams were unable to get in the full match. The Tigers would defeat Tech 5-0 in the abbreviated contest.
The Warriors return to action on Monday, Sept. 10 when they host Trine University at Swinney Park at 4 p.m.
