Fort Wayne, Ind. – The Indiana Tech women’s tennis team wrapped up its regular season schedule with an 8-1 win over Indiana University East in a non-conference match on Monday afternoon at Swinney Park.
The win improved Tech’s overall mark to 5-10 on the year, the most wins for a Warrior team since the 2008-09 season. Meanwhile, Indiana East dipped to 9-14.
The Warriors took a 3-0 lead over the Red Wolves after winning all three doubles flights. Ana Hernandez and Mounia Sami combined for an 8-0 win at first doubles while Stephanie Perez and Barbara Belli de Oliveira recorded an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles. Kayla Morrell and Ashley Benvenuti completed the sweep prevailing 9-7 at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Hernandez edged out her opponent 7-5 in the first set at first singles before taking the second set 6-2. Sami lost only one game at No. 2 singles coming away with the 6-1, 6-0 triumph. Perez and Oliveira were also straight set victors at third and fourth singles. Morrell suffered a close three set defeat at No. 5 singles, but Benvenuti won at No. 6 singles 6-1, 6-2.
The Warriors will begin the WHAC Tournament on Friday, Apr. 26 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
