Fort Wayne, Ind. – The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference has announced the 2012-13 WHAC women’s tennis awards and highlighting the honors for Indiana Tech was first-year head coach Raquel Vescovi receiving WHAC Coach of the Year recognition.

In her first season leading the Warriors, Coach Vescovi guided a youthful Tech team to a 5-11 overall record, four more wins than a year ago, and the most wins by the program since the 2008-09 season.

On a team loaded with freshmen and sophomores, Coach Vescovi saw four of her players land on All-Conference teams. Freshman Ana Hernandez was named to the First Team All-Conference while freshmen Barbara Belli de Oliveira and Mounia Sami and sophomore Stephanie Perez were tabbed to the Honorable Mention Team.

Hernandez stepped in right away at the No. 1 singles position and posted a 6-9 overall record this season with a 2-2 mark in conference matches. She also played at No. 1 doubles and finished her rookie campaign with a record of 5-12 in those matches.

Belli de Oliveira and Sami joined the Warriors before the start of the indoor season and made an impact immediately. Belli de Oliveira spent the majority of her time at No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles. She had a 4-9 record in singles competition and 7-6 record in doubles, the second most doubles wins on the team. Sami, who played at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles, had an 8-5 singles record in her first year with the Warriors while compiling a 4-9 mark in doubles.

Perez was a standout performer for Indiana Tech during her freshman season and continued her solid play as a sophomore. She racked up a team-best 12 wins in singles competition, going a perfect 4-0 in conference play, while ending the season on a five match winning streak. She also compiled the most doubles wins on the squad with 10. Her final records on the season were 12-5 in singles, playing most of the season at No. 3, and 10-8 in doubles.

In addition to her First Team All-Conference selection, Hernandez was also named to the WHAC Champions of Character Team for best representing the five core values of the NAIA’s Champions of Character initiative – integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership.
