Fort Wayne, Ind. – The Indiana Tech women’s tennis team took a big step forward this season under the direction of first year head coach Raquel Vescovi, who was named the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.
Coach Vescovi didn’t waste any time getting the first career win under her belt as Tech defeated Indiana University East in the first match of the season. The Warriors would end the fall portion of their schedule with a 1-2 record.
Indiana Tech had success early in the spring season, winning two of their first three matches to move their record to 3-3 overall. The Warriors had trouble getting in a groove over the next few weeks though facing tough competition and battling the weather, which forced several changes to the schedule.
The Warriors ended the regular season on a high note prevailing in back-to-back matches against conference foe Cornerstone University and Indiana East heading into the NAIA Unaffiliated Regional Tournament. Tech, the tournament’s fifth-seed, faced a tough matchup in the opening round in fourth-seed Aquinas College where the Saints defeated the Warriors to close their season.
Tech wrapped up its 2012-13 campaign with a 5-11 record with a very challenging schedule and a youthful team that featured five freshman and two sophomores. Even though they had such a young team, the talent is there as the Warriors landed four players on the WHAC All-Conference Teams. Freshman Ana Hernandez was selected to the First Team All-Conference while fellow freshmen Barbara Belli de Oliveira and Mounia Sami as well as sophomore Stephanie Perez earned a spot on the Honorable Mention Team.
Coach Vescovi has her Warriors building in the right direction, and with all the valuable experience gained this season as well as a strong core group of players returning, Indiana Tech is on track to be one of the top teams in the conference for many years to come.
