RESULTS | GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –The Indiana Tech women’s tennis team saw two doubles teams and Stephanie Perez in singles advance to the second and third rounds, respectively, on day one of the USTA/ITA East Regional at Orchard Hills Swim and Sports Club on Thursday.
Perez, who is seeded 16th in the singles main draw, is the lone Warrior left after defeating Aquinas’ Kacey Jacobs 6-1, 6-0 and then dismissing Mikayla Marazzi of Indiana Wesleyan 4-6, 7-6(4), 11. She has earned a spot in the final 16 and will square off against Kateryna Bondarenko of Northwestern Ohio, who defeated top seeded Katie Wilson in the second round.
Raquel Manzoni joined Perez in the second round, defeating Celine Rongos of Huntington 6-0, 6-4 in the first round before falling to eighth-seeded Andrea Arango of UNOH 6-2, 6-3. Ninth-seed Ana Hernandez was upset in round one after a tough loss in a third set tie-break to Sarah Smith of Taylor, 5-7, 6-1, 5.
Hernandez got her revenge in doubles as her and Manzoni upended Taylor’s duo of Smith and Chow, 8-0 and will face the sixth-seeded team of Futrell and Bottorf of IWU. Also winning their doubles match was the Warrior duo of Barbara Oliveira and Perez who defeated Silvers and Rusticus of Cornerstone, 8-1 and will square off against seventh-seeded Luttikhuis and Kooyers of Davenport.
Perez will take the court first at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow with quarterfinal play to take place at 12:30 p.m. while doubles matches are scheduled for begin at 2:15 p.m. and the quarterfinals matches to follow at 4:15 p.m.
