For Immediate Release
Des Moines, Iowa – Indiana Tech sophomore Travis Barroquillo will return to the All-American podium once again after clinching a spot in the top-8 at the conclusion of day one at the 2013 NAIA Wrestling National Championships.
Following a first round bye, Barroquillo, the 4th ranked grappler at 133-lbs, pinned No. 14 Dennis Welch from Missouri Valley in 1:55. Barroquillo was defeated in the next round though by No. 2 Angel Garcia of Menlo 6-2, but he bounced back with a 7-2 decision win over Hastings’ Alec Chanthapatheth.
Also guaranteeing himself All-American honors was Kris McKinley. McKinley won four matches on the opening day of the event with victories over No. 16 Travis Shelnutt (Central Baptist), No. 9 Ryan Stearns (Missouri Valley), No. 6 Sean Blumhardt (Jamestown), and No. 7 Sean Silva (Embry-Riddle). His only loss came at the hands of No. 1 ranked Mitchell Lofstedt (Southern Oregon).
Adam Fahs and Tanner Martin just missed making it to the All-American round. At 157-lbs, Fahs fell to No. 11 Trever Devestern of Dakota Wesleyan by a final score of 8-3 in a hard fought match. Fahs was also one match shy of earning All-American last year. Martin, the No. 5 ranked wrestler at 174-lbs, dropped a one point match to No. 9 Parker Owen from Baker.
The Warriors are currently in 14th place in the team standings with 22.5 points. Action resumes tomorrow with session three at 10 a.m. in the Jacobson Exhibition Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
