FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech wrestling and Head Coach Mike Ester are proud to announce the first signing for the 2014-15 season in Macomb, Mich. product, Jake Johnson.
“Indiana Tech is everything I wanted in a college,” Johnson said. “I believe I can achieve all my goals here and help our team strive towards an NAIA National Championship.”
Johnson took fourth place in Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Division 1 at 152-pounds this year, while also placing fourth in 2012 at 135-pounds. In 2011 he was a State Qualifier at 125-pounds and has an overall record of 142-25.
The No. 28 overall wrestler in Michigan, according to Michigangrappler.com, Johnson is a two-time USA Wrestling Central Region champ in Greco (2011-2013) and took second in freestyle in May while winning both events at the Michigan Championship. In 2012 he placed second in freestyle at the Michigan Championship while also placing second in Greco at the USA Wrestling Central Regional in May 2012. He also took second place in Greco and fourth place in Freestyle at the Michigan Championship in 2011 as well as a five-time member of the Michigan National Team Freestyle and Greco.
As a youth wrestler, Johnson was MYWAY State Folkstyle Championship State Champion at 114-pounds in 2010 while taking second place in Greco and Freestyle at the Michigan Championship and took second place at the Liberty Nationals. He was also the Greco Champion and second in Freestyle in May 2009 at the Michigan Championship.
“This is a great signing for us as we start replacing the first group of seniors we are graduating,” stated Ester on Johnson. “We are expecting him to come in and prepare to compete for us on the varsity level at 165-pounds. Jake has a true passion and dedication for the sport of wrestling and we feel fortunate signing him so early. We’ll enjoy watching his run towards his goal of becoming a MHSAA State Champion.”
