Crawfordsville, IN – The Indiana Tech wrestling team was in Crawfordsville, Indiana on Friday and Saturday for the Indiana Little State Tournament where freshman Tanner Martin (Ft. Wayne, IN/Snider) became Tech’s first ever tournament champion. The Warriors also qualified three more for the NAIA National Championships and saw 11 grapplers place over the weekend.
Martin defeated three top-seeded opponents and posted a 4-0 record on his way to winning the 184-pound weight class. On Friday, he picked up a pair of victories by fall, including one over 2nd-seeded Greg Rhoads of Wabash at 3:36. Martin began Saturday’s action with a 6-4 decision over 6th-seeded Logan Cooper of Wabash to set up a meeting with 1st-seeded Mike Johnson of Lincoln College in the finals, where he earned a 9-6 victory.
Freshman Reece Lefever (Ft. Wayne, IN/Carroll) and juniors Kafuba Donzon (Albany, GA/Darton) and Andre Dunn (Kewanee, IL/Lincoln) all qualified for the NAIA National Championships at the meet bring Tech’s total to seven qualifiers of a possible 12.
Lefever finished runner-up at 149 pounds, falling to Wabash’s Jake Strausbaugh in the finals in a 10-7 decision. Strausbaugh was later named the Little State Outstanding Wrestling. Donzon went 4-1 in the 165-pound division before dropping a 3-2 decision in the bout for third place. Dunn picked up three straight wins on his way to the championship match in the heavyweight division, where he fell to the top-seed by a 4-0 decision.
Also placing at the meet were Andre Sanders (Farmington Hills, MI/Harrison) in 4th at 125, Connor Hughes (Portage, MI/Northern) in 5th at 125, Travis Barroquillo (Wolcottville, IN/Prairie Heights) in 2nd at 133, Jordan Bosma (Hesperia, MI/Hesperia) in 3rd at 133, Brett Yarbrough (McDonough, GA/Henry County) in 4th at 133, James Bennett (Bowden, GA/Darton) in 5th at 165, and Dustin Boyd (Mishawaka, IN/Calumet) in 7th at 184.
The Warriors are back in action on Friday, December 9 in Williamsburg, Kentucky at the University of the Cumberlands for the Patriot Duals.
