For Immediate Release
Des Moines, Iowa – Freshmen Travis Barroquillo (Wolcottville, IN/Prairie Heights) and Tanner Martin (Ft. Wayne, IN/Snider) became the Indiana Tech wrestling team’s first All-Americans on Saturday at the NAIA National Championships, and guaranteed themselves a top 6 finish in their weight classes. Both will compete tomorrow for the opportunity to earn 3rd place honors.
Barroquillo began the tournament by defeating the 10th and 5th ranked wrestlers at 133-pounds to remain in the championship bracket. Following a loss to Omi Acosta of Grand View University, he pinned his next two opponents to earn All-American status by locking up a spot in the top 8.
At 174-pounds, Martin won his first match by pinfall before dropping into the wrestleback bracket. There he won back-to-back bouts by major decision to advance to the consolation semifinals, also securing All-American honors.
The Warriors are currently in 15th place in the team standings. Action resumes tomorrow at 10 a.m. when Barroquillo and Martin will compete for a 3rd place finish.
