Fort Wayne, Ind. – All-American wrestler Travis Barroquillo (Wolcottville, IN/Prairie Heights) has been selected to represent Indiana Tech in the 47th annual NWCA All-Star Classic, held at American University in Washington D.C., on Nov. 3.
Barroquillo will square off against Sam Shames of Massachusetts Institute of Technology in one of four exhibition matches prior to the ten marquee bouts, which features 20 of the country’s top NCAA Division I wrestlers.
Barroquillo had an outstanding freshman campaign that was capped off by defeating two top-10 wrestlers on his way to a fourth place at 133-lbs in the 2012 NAIA National Championships, earning All-American status. He owned a 32-14 overall record, including 12 pins, in his debut season and enters the 2012-13 season as the NAIA’s top-ranked grappler in his weight class.
“This is an outstanding opportunity for Travis,” said Indiana Tech Head Coach Mike Ester. “We are extremely proud to represent the NAIA and Indiana Tech in Washington D.C. Events like this are the kind of moments you always cherish in an athletic career. The NWCA All-Star event is one of the premier events in all of college wrestling and it’s an honor for us to be a part of it”
His opponent, Sam Shames, also had an impressive season with a 29-1 record and ended the season with a second place finish at the 2012 NCWA National Championships.
The Warriors’ Coach Ester will also be representing Tech while in Washington D.C. after being invited to be a clinician at the All-Star Classic Wrestling Clinic being held prior to the event.
The NWCA has assembled the best staff of instructors, and legends, the world has ever seen at one time in one location and is being called “The Greatest Clinic Ever Held.”
“I’m humbled and honored to be a part of such an amazing event,” said Ester. “The All-star Classic Clinic is littered with some of the United States’ most legendary wrestling coaches and athletes. And to be able to be a part of the part of the ‘greatest wrestling clinic ever held’ in our nation’s capital will be an experience that will be forever memorable.”
Coach Ester and the Indiana Tech wrestling team have certainly made an impact around the country after just one season of competition. Entering the program’s second year, the Warriors are ranked No. 9 in the NAIA Top 20 Poll and have six wrestlers ranked in their respective weight classes.
Indiana Tech will open their season on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the Eastern Michigan University Open in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
