Fort Wayne, Ind. – In front of a crowd of over 200 people, the 9th ranked Indiana Tech wrestling team decided their fall semester varsity spots in their second annual intra-squad dual meet held in the Warrior Athletic Center on Friday night.
In the match at 133-lbs, Travis Barroquillo (Wolcottville, IN/Prairie Heights), currently ranked No. 1 in the country in the weight class, built a 16-2 lead before finishing off Kourtney Odom (Ft. Wayne, IN/Northrop) with a fall at 4:15 to sweep the best two-out-of-three series.
James Bennett (Bowden, GA/Darton), at 157-lbs, and Logan Rimmer (Temperance, MI/Bedford), at 285-lbs, each won their series 2-0 to capture the varsity spot.
Kris McKinley (Ft. Wayne, IN/Northrop) tied the series at 1-1 with a 4-3 decision over returning national qualifier Brett Yarbrough (McDonough, GA/Henry County). However, in the deciding third match, Yarbrough earned a third period escape to win the bout 3-2.
In what turned out to be the most dramatic match of the night, No. 5 ranked Adam Fahs (Portage, MI/Trine) scored an escape at the buzzer to secure a 5-4 victory over Travis Dragomer (Stevensville, MI/Stevensville Lakeshore) to claim the varsity spot at 141-lbs.
Following the dramatic finish in the previous match, Sidney Logan (Mishawaka, IN/Mishawaka) and Brent Browner (Jeffersonville, IN/Jeffersonville) kept the impressive crowd on the edge of their seat in the battle at 149-lbs. Logan finished the match with a late escape and takedown to force overtime where he defeated Browner by a 13-11 decision.
At 174-lbs, returning All-American Tanner Martin (Ft. Wayne, IN/Snider) was unable to compete due to injury so Kafuba Donzon (Albany, GA/Darton), a returning national qualifier, took his place. Donzon was defeated though by Darryl Grayson (Springfield, OH/Springfield) in overtime by fall.
At 184-lbs, Taylor DeLong (Westfield, IN/Westfield) won an impressive 8-0 major decision over Kelvin Jordan (Albany, GA/Darton) to tie the series 1-1. But, Jordan got back into form in the third match with a 14-8 major decision victory.
Dustin Boyd (Mishawaka, IN/Calumet) won the varsity spot at 197-lbs with a 6-2 win over a much improved Elijah Curtley (Jeffersonville, IN/Jeffersonville).
At 165-lbs, James Starks (Ft. Wayne, IN/Snider) returned to the mat after falling to Bennett earlier and put on an impressive performance over Tyler Goldman (Fairdale, KY/Fairdale) building a 12-3 lead before finishing the match with a fall at 4:48 in the second period.
The Warriors open their season on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the Eastern Michigan University Open in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
