Washington, D.C. – In a historic night at Bender Arena on the campus of American University, Indiana Tech’s Travis Barroquillo (Wolcottville, IN/Prairie Heights) defeated Sam Shames of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology 8-2 at the 47th annual NWCA All-Star Classic on Saturday, Nov. 3.
Barroquillo and Shames competed in one of the four exhibition matches prior to the event’s ten marquee bouts, which featured 20 of the country’s top NCAA Division I wrestlers.
“What an exciting event to be a part of!” said Indiana Tech Head Coach Mike Ester. “Travis was outstanding in his match and represented not only our program with great pride, but the Indiana Tech Community. We are proud of Travis and it was an honor for me to have the opportunity to sit in his corner for the victory. We are looking forward to this being the kick start to his run for a national title this year.”
Barroquillo came in as the NAIA’s top-ranked wrestler at 133-lbs while Shames entered after posting a 29-1 record last season and a second place finish at the NCWA National Championships.
Barroquillo went up 2-0 before Shames tied the score with a reversal.
It was all Barroquillo from there though, hitting Shames with a reversal of his own late in the first period and would end the stanza with a 6-2 advantage.
Barroquillo expanded his lead after a takedown early in the second to go up 8-2 and would hold on for the win.
“This event will be a moment that Travis and his family can cherish forever,” added Coach Ester. “We want to thank our administration here at Indiana Tech and all for the support they have given us to have the opportunities to be a part of such a great event.”
