Tech Goes 2-2 at Warrior Duals

December 8, 2012

For Immediate Release

Fort Wayne, Ind. – The Indiana Tech wrestling team hosted the Warrior Duals on Saturday where the 15th ranked Warriors posted a 2-2 record, defeating No. 12 University of Cumberlands and Hannibal-LaGrange University.

The meet featured five teams either ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA Top 20 and had more than 25 ranked individuals.

Tech began the day by nearly toppling No. 13 Missouri Baptist University. With the Warriors trailing 19-18, it all came down to the final match at 285-lbs pitting No. 14 Logan Rimmer (Temperance, MI/Bedford) against No. 10 Julius Anglickas. The contest was close the entire way but Anglickas pulled away at the very end, earning a 10-5 decision win and giving the Spartans a 22-18 win over the Warriors.

Four Tech grapplers picked up wins, including pins by Travis Barroquillo (Wolcottville, IN/Prairie Heights) and Dustin Boyd (Mishawaka, IN/Calumet). Barroquillo, the 5th ranked wrestler at 133-lbs, was bumped up to 141-lbs and needed just 1:04 to dispose of his opponent while Boyd, 15th ranked at 197-lbs, won in 4:51.

Up next, the Warriors posted a dominant 40-7 victory over the Hannibal-LaGrange Trojans, who were receiving votes in the NAIA Top 20 Poll.

Tech jumped out to a 29-0 lead following a tech fall win by Kris McKinley (Ft. Wayne, IN/Northrop), pins by Barroquillo and Brent Browner (Jeffersonville, IN/Jeffersonville), and a pair of forfeits en route to the victory.

Also earning wins were 2nd ranked Tanner Martin (Ft. Wayne, IN/Snider), Boyd, and Rimmer.

The Warriors kept the wins coming when they squared off against 12th ranked Cumberlands, upsetting the Patriots 28-19.

The two teams were tied 13-13 after six bouts, but the Warriors would take a commanding lead after back-to-back pins by Darryl Grayson (Springfield, OH/Springfield) and Martin. At 174-lbs, Grayson stuck his opponent with one second left in the opening period, and Martin, who jumped up to 184-lbs, followed with second straight pinfall to put Tech in front for good.

The final dual meet of the afternoon was filled with drama as the 5th ranked Campbellsville Tigers edged the Warriors in a thrilling contest 18-13. Eight of the ten matches were decided by three points or less, and four came down to a single point.

McKinley struck first for the Warriors, upsetting 16th ranked Jarvis Elam 3-1. However, Tech would drop the next four matches. Barroquillo, wrestling at 141-lbs, took the 11th ranked grappler Brandon Westerman to the brink, but came up just short 14-13. Browner followed tying the match 11-11 against 5th ranked Chris Teague, but the riding time bonus gave Campbellsville the close win.

At 165-lbs, 10th ranked James Bennett (Bowden, GA/Darton) got the Warriors back on track with a 4-1 decision and Martin closed the gap to 12-10 with a major decision victory.

The next two matches at 184-lbs and 197-lbs came down to the wire. Freshman Darryl Grayson scored a takedown in the closing seconds of the match to tie the score, but would fall in the overtime period. Fellow freshman Taylor DeLong (Westfield, IN/Westfield) tried to keep the Warriors hopes alive, going up against 2nd ranked Allen Scruggs. DeLong gave it everything he had but would fall just short 3-2.

The Warriors return to the mat on Dec. 15-16 at the Midwest Classic Invitational hosted by the University of Indianapolis in Indianapolis, Indiana.
