Grand View Results | Lindsey Wilson Results
Springfield, Ill. – Even though the 16th ranked Indiana Tech wrestling team went 0-2 at the 2013 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals over the weekend, falling to No. 1 Grand View University and No. 8 Lindsey Wilson College, the Warriors showed that they could compete with the nation’s best.
The Warriors lost to the top-ranked Vikings 33-3 to kick off the tournament before Lindsey Wilson slipped past them 19-17 in the consolation bracket.
Grand View, the defending NAIA national champions, went on to eventually win the championship by defeating Southern Oregon University.
Against Grand View, Tech’s lone victory came at 174-lbs where sophomore Tanner Martin (Ft. Wayne, IN/Snider), the 8th ranked wrestler in the weight class, earned a 7-3 decision win over No. 9 Cody Swim.
The Vikings featured eight ranked grapplers in the ten matches, but the Warriors were in almost all of them losing six by decision. At 184-lbs, Kelvin Jordan (Albany, GA/Darton) gave No.11 Christian Mays all he could handle, but came up just short in a 4-2 loss. Adam Fahs (Portage, MI/Trine) also nearly upset No. 4 Dallas Houchins at 165-lbs, but Houchins was able to hang on for the 5-2 win.
The loss moved Tech into the consolation bracket where they would meet No. 8 Lindsey Wilson next. The match wasn’t any easier with the Blue Raiders bringing seven ranked wrestlers into the contest. Barroquillo got the Warriors off to a great start though by pinning No. 11 Jacob McCombs in 3:46 and Sidney Logan (Mishawaka, IN/Mishawaka) would pick up a major decision victory at 149-lbs.
After the first five matches the score was tied 10-10, but back-to-back wins by James Bennett (Bowden, GA/Darton) and Martin gave the Warriors a 17-10 advantage. Bennett defeated No. 11 James Haywood 6-3, and Martin won by major decision over No. 15 Cadyn McKeeth.
Tech would drop the next two matches by decision though as Lindsey Wilson narrowed the gap to 17-16. Both teams’ tournament lives came down to the final match at 285-lbs where freshman Logan Rimmer (Temperance, MI/Bedford) would lose to No. 7 Theodore Furnish 4-2 in overtime.
The Warriors return to action on Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Missouri Valley Invitational.
