Laurinburg, N.C. – The 15th ranked Warriors finished in fifth place with 94.5 points at the 2013 NAIA East Regional Qualifying Group Tournament on Saturday while eight wrestlers punched their ticket to the 56th annual NAIA National Championships, including Travis Barroquillo and James Bennett who were crowned champions at 133-lbs and 165-lbs, respectively.
No. 4 Lindsey Wilson College finished first in the team standings with 155.5 points. No. 5 Campbellsville University took second with 146.5 points and was followed by No. 11 Cumberland University (103.0) and No. 12 Missouri Baptist University (103.0).
Four Warriors qualified automatically for the national championships by finishing top-four in their weight class, and four others earned at-large berths.
After pinning his first opponent, Barroquillo knocked off the region’s top seed Tyler Alsip from Campbellsville 7-2 to advance to the finals. In the championship match, Barroquillo met Lindsey Wilson’s Jacob McCombs, who defeated him 6-3 earlier this month at the LWC Duals. The outcome would be different this time though as Barroquillo won 9-8 to win the title at 133-lbs.
In the 165-lbs division, Bennett, the region’s No. 1 seed, beat Cumberland’s Jake Shirley 7-5 and then topped Lindsey Wilson’s Cadyn McKeeth 4-3 to move on to the finals. There he defeated another LWC grappler, 2nd-seeded James Haywood, 5-3 to take home the championship.
At 174-lbs, Tanner Martin won his first two matches, to set up a showdown between the top-two seeds for the championship. But it would be Zeke Hunt of Cumberland who came out on top 7-4 giving Martin a second place finish.
Also earning a top-four finish was Adam Fahs, who placed fourth at 157-lbs. Fahs, who came in as the No. 5 seed, started his tournament run with a 6-3 victory over Life University’s Oliver Brukardt before dropping a 9-3 decision to 2nd-seeded Michael Gonzalez from Cumberland. He battled back though with a 12-3 major decision win, but lost to LWC’s Joe Cozart 5-3. In the match for fourth place, Fahs won by rule over Brukardt.
Kris McKinley, Sidney Logan, Darryl Grayson and Logan Rimmer all received at-large bids. McKinley, Logan, and Grayson all earned fifth place finishes in their divisions. McKinley went 3-3 on the day at 125-lbs, Logan went 2-3 at 149-lbs, and Grayson posted a record of 4-3 at 174-lbs. Rimmer finished 2-2 at 285-lbs.
Indiana Tech will look to crown its first national champion in two weeks when they travel to Des Moines, Iowa for the 56th annual NAIA National Championships held at the Jacobson Exhibition Center on Mar. 1-2.
