For Immediate Release

Fort Wayne, Ind. – The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference announced its postseason honors for softball and Indiana Tech’s Patrice Suplicki was named to the First Team All-WHAC.

Suplicki picked up her second career piece of All-WHAC hardware following a terrific junior campaign. She batted .351 with nine doubles, 17 runs scored, and 19 RBI. She was always a tough out for the opposing pitcher, only striking out six times in 120 plate appearances, and was a threat on the base paths swiping seven bags in ten attempts.

Receiving Honorable Mention All-Conference nods were Martika Armstead, Jessica Cotton, Taylor Craven, and Jenevie Rivas. Armstead, a First Team and All-Region selection last year, capped off her spectacular career hitting .323 and scoring a team high 32 runs. She was a career .355 hitter and her name litters the Indiana Tech record books. She owns the all-time single season record for hits (82) and runs (60), and is the career leader in triples (16), runs (188), and at-bats (673).

After garnering First Team All-WHAC and First Team All-Region as a freshman, Cotton followed it up with another solid season by hitting .319 with five homeruns and a team-best 22 RBI. In addition to leading the squad in homers and RBI, she also paced the team in doubles with 12 and runs with 19. Craven finished the year hitting .286 with nine runs and nine RBI. In the circle, she went 2-8 with a 4.96 earned run average. Rivas hit .167 during her freshman season with two homeruns and 12 RBI. She also went 0-6 with a 5.75 ERA.

Freshman Cortney Bingham was named to the Champions of Character Team for best representing the five core values of the NAIA’s Champions of Character initiative – integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership.

Three Warriors were earned a spot on the All-Academic Team. Those earning the honor were Tori Kilps, Cyan Kissinger, and Kelsey Kline. To qualify, an athlete must achieve a 3.25 or better GPA and be a junior or above in academic standing.

Michigan-Dearborn Box Score | Siena Heights Box Score

Battle Creek, Mich. – After dropping a close 2-0 game to the University of Michigan-Dearborn to open the 2013 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament, the Indiana Tech softball team fell to Siena Heights University 12-6 in an elimination game on Wednesday night at Bailey Park in Battle Creek, Michigan.

Michigan-Dearborn (6-34) plated their first run in the second inning to take the early lead. The Wolves got back-to-back hits to start the inning, but Tech starter Taylor Craven fanned two next batters. The Warriors weren’t out of the jam yet though as Michigan-Dearborn strung together two more two-out hits to jump on top 1-0.

The Wolves looked to add another run in the third, but Sofia Johantgen made a nice running grab down the left field line and threw a strike to the plate to nail the runner tagging from third to end the inning.

With the Warriors trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth, senior Martika Armstead led off the inning by ripping a triple down the left field line. Johantgen followed by scorching a liner that looked like it was on its way into right field, but was snared by the second baseman. Patrice Suplicki followed by lifting a fly ball into center, but Armstead was called out on a close play at the plate trying to score.

Still down two in their final at-bat, Jessica Cotton got the inning started with a base hit, but two batters later Tori Kilps smacked a line drive right back to the pitcher who made the catch and doubled off Cotton to end the game.

Armstead had two of the Warriors’ three hits. Craven was hit with the loss giving up just one earned run in 5.2 innings pitched with three strikeouts.

Next up, Tech tried to avoid elimination against Siena Heights. The Warriors fell behind 5-1 after two and a half innings, but put up a four spot in the home half of the third to tie the game. Armstead and Johantgen led off the frame with hits before Suplicki singled to drive in a run. Later in the inning, Craven singled down the right field line to bring around two more, and eventually scored on a Saint error to cap off the inning.

Siena Heights (18-22) responded though with three more in the fourth and four in the sixth en route to the win.

Four Warriors had multi-hit games while Suplicki and Craven drove in two runs apiece and Armstead scored three times.

The Warriors finish their season with an overall record of 10-30.

Grand Rapids, Mich. – The Indiana Tech softball team closed out the 2013 regular season on Saturday by visiting the conference leader Cornerstone University. The Warriors had the lead for most of the first game, but a pair of late runs by the Golden Eagles lifted them to a 2-1 win before defeating Tech 7-2 in game two.

Indiana Tech took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one when Martika Armstead crossed the plate on a base hit by Jessica Cotton.

The Tech pitching staff would make that lead stand up through five innings, but Cornerstone got a big two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the sixth to take a 2-1 lead and would retire the Warriors in the seventh to escape with the win.

Cornerstone (30-4, 14-2 WHAC) took the early lead in game two, eventually built a 7-0 lead heading into the seventh inning. Cotton broke up the no-hitter with a one-out single and, one batter later, Taylor Craven followed with another base hit. Tori Kilps then delivered a double to left to drive in both runners, but that’s as close as the Warriors would get.

Indiana Tech finished the regular season at 10-28 overall with a mark of 3-13 in conference play.

Lourdes Box Score | Siena Heights Box Score

Adrian, Mich. – The Indiana Tech softball team traveled to Adrian, Michigan on Thursday afternoon to conclude a pair of suspended games against Lourdes University and Siena Heights University. The Warriors ended up falling to Lourdes 4-1, but picked up an 8-4 win over Siena Heights.

The game against Lourdes picked up in the bottom of the fourth inning with Tech trailing 3-1. The Warriors got hits in the fourth, fifth, and sixth, including doubles by Tori Kilps and Jessica Cotton, but were unable to cash in on the opportunities.

The Gray Wolves got a two-out RBI hit in the top of the seventh to increase their lead to three and would hold on for the win.

Martika Armstead went 2-for-4 with a run scored while Patrice Suplicki finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Sam Berrios went the distance in a losing effort, surrendering just two earned runs on eight hits while fanning two.

The game against Siena Heights resumed with the Warriors in front 3-1 in the bottom of the third. After Taylor Craven retired the Saints in the third, Tech wasted little time padding their lead. The Warriors loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth when Sofia Johantgen delivered a clutch base hit up the middle to score two runs.

The Tech bats stayed hot plating another run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to pull ahead 8-1. The Saints rallied for three runs in the seventh, but the SHU comeback attempt would fall short as the Warriors prevailed 8-4.

Johantgen and Suplicki both finished 2-for-4 at the plate, driving in three runs apiece. Armstead also collected two hits and scored twice. Craven earned the win tossing all seven innings allowing only one earned run and had two strikeouts.

The Warriors and Saints played a non-conference game following the suspended contest. Tech built an early 5-1 lead, but the game was called due to darkness before the required number of innings so it did not count as an official game.

Indiana Tech (10-26, 3-11 WHAC) will wrap up the regular season in Grand Rapids, Michigan for a WHAC doubleheader with conference leader Cornerstone University. Action is set to get underway at 1 p.m.

Grand Rapids, Mich. – The Indiana Tech softball team dropped both games of Sunday’s twinbill at Davenport University by identical 9-0 scores.

The Warriors fell to 9-22 on the year and 2-7 in the conference while Davenport improved its record to 28-11-1 and a WHAC best 11-3 in league play.

In the first game, the Panthers struck first with a leadoff homerun in the bottom of the first inning. Tech starter Sam Berrios setted in though and retired nine of the next 11 DU batters.

With Davenport still holding a slim 1-0 lead through three and a half innings, the Panthers capitalized on four Tech errors in the home half of the fourth to plate six runs. Davenport would end the game in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run homerun.

The Warriors were held to two hits, one by Taylor Craven and one by Kelsey Kline. Berrios took the loss after giving up eight runs, but only two earned, on five hits with three stikeouts.

The Tech offense struggled to get much going in game two as well coming up with just four hits. Meanwhile, Davenport scored six times in the second and added three more in the third.

Katie Bird went 2-for-2 at the plate while Craven suffered the loss in the circle.

The Warriors will host Lourdes University on Tuesday, Apr. 23 in a WHAC doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. at Havenhurst Park in New Haven.

Ann Arbor, Mich. – The Indiana Tech softball team lost a pair of close games against WHAC foe Concordia University on Saturday, falling 9-7 in extra innings in game one before being edged out 3-1 in game two.

Concordia (18-13-1, 6-6 WHAC) jumped all over the Warriors in game one scoring seven runs in the first two innings. Tech rallied back though plating four runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth to tie the game.

The Warriors threatened in the sixth, putting runners at second and third with only one out, but were unable to push across the go-ahead run.

Following a scoreless sixth and seventh inning, the game went to extras where the Cardinals would prevail. With one out and one on in the bottom of the ninth, Concordia’s Kortney Loar hit a walk-off two-run homerun to end the game.

Jessica Cotton had a pair of hits to lead the way and also scored two runs. Tori Kilps took the loss throwing 8.1 innings and giving up seven earned runs on five hits while recording four strikeouts.

Tech took the early lead in game two when Taylor Craven scored on an RBI double by Cortney Bingham in the top of the second inning. However, the Cardinals tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom half of the frame on a two-out single.

Concordia came through with another two-out hit to plate the go-ahead run in the fourth, and added an insurance run in the sixth before retiring the Warriors in order in the seventh.

The Warriors were limited to four hits in the contest. Pitcher Sam Berrios was hit with the loss despite the solid outing, allowing just three runs over six innings while fanning four.

Indiana Tech (9-20, 2-5 WHAC) will look to get back in the win column tomorrow when they visit Davenport University. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
