Fort Wayne, Ind. – Indiana Tech will bring collegiate hockey to Fort Wayne with the addition of a men’s ice hockey team in fall 2014. The Warriors will play in the American Collegiate Hockey Association.

“This is a great opportunity for us to expand our athletic programs with a sport that has a passionate following in this area,” said Arthur E. Snyder, president of Indiana Tech. “The chance to continue competing in a sport they love can be a great motivator for a student to succeed in college, and there aren’t a lot of options for young hockey players to do that.”

A search for a head coach is under way, and the university will recruit student-athletes for a 40-man roster to begin play in fall 2014. Potential opponents include Davenport University, Lawrence Tech, Aquinas College, Calvin College, and Hope College.

“We’re looking forward to developing partnerships with Canlan Ice Sports, the Fort Wayne Area High School Hockey Association, the Komets, and other hockey organizations in the community,” Snyder said.

The scope of Warrior athletics has grown steadily in recent years. In addition to the new ice hockey team, Indiana Tech programs include band, baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s bowling, coed cheer, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s track and field, women’s volleyball, and wrestling.

NAIA Learfield Sports Directors' Cup Final Standings

Fort Wayne, Ind. – Indiana Tech added to its already incredibly successful year on Thursday when the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) released the final standings of the 2012-13 NAIA Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. The Warriors, who were ranked 21st after the first spring standings, rose five spots to No. 16, the highest finish in school history.

It was the second consecutive top-25 finish for the Warriors who racked up 485.75 points, topping last year’s total of 440.00 that garnered a 22nd place finish.

Oklahoma Baptist University claimed its first NAIA Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup after compiling 964.00 points, scoring in 14 sports and winning four national titles.

Tech captured two national championships, the first two in school history, and scored in six sports. In addition to the 232.75 points earned by the men’s and women’s indoor track & field teams and the wrestling team during the winter season, the men’s and women’s outdoor track & field teams claimed 100 points apiece for their national titles while baseball collected 53 more to vault the Warriors up the standings.

The Warriors also had the best finish among Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference members after passing Aquinas College who ended at No. 19. Two other WHAC schools joined Tech and Aquinas in the top-50. Davenport University came in at No. 34 and Cornerstone University at No. 38.

The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the NACDA and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 12 sports -- six women’s and six men’s.
