Momentum: Accelerating Excellence

Student Support Services

Student Support Services encompasses a wide range of programs and services to support your academic endeavors. You’ll find help with study skills, tutoring, writing assistance, peer support, counseling, and an understanding staff to help you over the bumps in your collegiate road.

Also, because college life isn’t all academics, you’ll find cultural enrichment activities to broaden your mind in ways that textbooks and exams can’t.

Academic & Personal Counseling

The Student Support Services staff is available on a drop-in basis or by appointment to meet individually with students to discuss academic or personal concerns. When appropriate, referrals may be made to sources of help in the community. Participants in the study skills and probation programs will meet monthly with staff to review progress reports from each of their classes and to strategize for success.

For more information, contact Mary Scudder at MCScudder@IndianaTech.edu or at (260) 422-5561, ext 2292.

Cultural enrichment

Tickets for cultural events are available for free or a reduced rate for eligible Indiana Tech students through Student Support Services. In recent years students have enjoyed Civic Theater productions such as “Guys and Dolls” and “Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”; professional plays including “Grease” and “Rent”; dance performances, such as Riverdance, Garth Fagan’s Dance Troupe and the Fort Wayne Ballet’s “Nutcracker”; as well as Philharmonic concerts, gospel plays, and other cultural events.

Student Support Services also sponsors an annual multicultural retreat. The retreat is held at Camp Potawotami, a camp/retreat facility that offers lodges, wooded trails, campfires, high rope skills, and fresh air. During the retreat, the students prepare their own meals representing their native cultures, participate in group discussions about interacting and respecting other cultures, and experience each other’s cultural norms. In addition to offering students a chance to get away from campus for a weekend, the participants develop their interpersonal skills and knowledge of Indiana Tech’s rich cultural diversity.

For information on upcoming cultural events offered through Student Support Services, contact Lori Wachtman at LJWachtman@IndianaTech.edu or at (260) 422-5561, ext. 2338.

Sponsor Program

Freshmen participants in Student Support Services’ Study Skills program are paired with upper class students who serve as peer sponsors to help ease the transition into college life. Peer sponsors are available to answer questions and offer support throughout the student’s first semester. They also plan a variety of activities for the study skills classes.

For more information, contact Lori Wachtman at LJWachtman@IndianaTech.edu or at (260) 422-5561, ext. 2338.

Study Skills Program

This program is designed to promote academic success in college by assisting eligible students in learning skills necessary to reach their educational objectives. In the College Study Skills course, students learn to manage time more efficiently, organize course materials more effectively, improve memory and concentration, use a note taking system and apply strategies to read textbooks more effectively. Students also learn how to prepare for tests and exams appropriately, locate and utilize a variety of resources on and off campus, identify personal learning styles and examine personal issues that may impact college success. Class meets once a week for eight weeks at the start of the semester.

Each Study Skills program participant is paired with an upper-class student sponsor who offers support and activities that expand the student’s social and cultural experiences. Participants also meet monthly with Student Support Services staff who review progress reports from their classes and help them strategize for improved performance.

Students are selected for this program on the basis of standardized test scores and high school transcripts; however, the course is open to any eligible student who may choose to enroll.

For more information, contact Lori Wachtman at LJWachtman@IndianaTech.edu or at (260) 422-5561, ext. 2338.

Tutoring

The Student Support Services peer-tutoring program was developed to provide Indiana Tech students with tutoring for freshman and sophomore level courses, particularly courses in mathematics, engineering, science, and accounting. Tutoring is free to eligible Indiana Tech students.

All tutoring is done by Indiana Tech students who have successfully completed the courses for which they provide tutoring with an A or B. Tutors must have a minimum 2.5 overall GPA as well as a minimum 2.50 major GPA.

The Tutoring Center opens the second full week of each semester. The hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. It is located in Cunningham Business Center in Room 160. Once you have met your professors and attended all your classes, you might decide that you need additional help with a class or two. If so, you can meet with our staff to be matched with a peer tutor or contact us at (260) 422-5561, ext. 2337.

Tutors are always needed. If you would like to make extra money, have a flexible schedule, and meet the criteria to be a tutor, contact the Tutoring Center coordinator, at (260) 422-5561, ext. 2396.

Writing Center

Do you need help generating ideas for a paper? Do dangling modifiers chase you in your nightmares? Do you just want someone to proofread an essay? Then come to the Indiana Tech writing center. Professors Savage, Wachtman, McGrade, and Malloris are available to help with all writing assignments.

Every spring, Freshman College and Student Support Services sponsor an Annual Talent Showcase featuring Indiana Tech students displaying their many diverse talents. Each year a variety of acts from original rap, R&B, dance, and gospel to renditions of playwrights and poets are performed for the Indiana Tech community.

In the past, local businesses have sponsored the talent show. They have included the following: Pizza Hut, Delmar, Putt-Putt Golf-n-Games, On the Boulevard, Pepsi, and Domino’s. All performers receive complimentary prizes for participating.
