Searching for a Job
Before beginning a job search, take the time to self-assess. A focused job search yields more results than applying to anything and everything.
- What is it exactly that you want to do?
- What skills/qualities make you marketable?
- What do you value most in a job, and what are you willing to sacrifice?
- What kind of working environment/industry would satisfy you most?
- Where do you want to live?
- Is location a factor in your job search?

Local and Nationwide Job Opportunities
One in five companies use the Internet to recruit candidates by adding recruitment sections to their web site (Olsten Center of Workforce Strategies), but 75% of all jobs are never listed publicly (Advantage Magazine). The best way to conduct a local or national job search is by networking! Most untapped opportunities are located in the "hidden job market," and only networking can make you aware of these. Utilize all social and professional contacts when job searching, and if you do not have any, create networks where they otherwise don't exist.

Researching Companies
It is important to do research about an organization before participating in an interview. Employers appreciate candidates that take the initiative to get to know the organization before taking time to interview. It is not necessary for you to know every detail about the organization, but rather a general overview. Some things you may want to consider knowing before the interview:
Organization Logistics
- Size of organization
- Potential growth/down-sizing
- Product line or services
- Clients & Competitors
- Organizational Structure
- Recent development in the news
- History of organization
Organization Culture
- Talk to alum/past field placements and other organization associates
- Is the company stable?
- Is it growing?
- What is the dress code policy?
- Work environment?
