Tech Plans Series of Black History Month Events
Fort Wayne, Ind.--Indiana Tech will host a series of four events to celebrate Black History Month at the university’s main campus in Fort Wayne.
All of the following events are open to the public free of charge:
- African-American Read-In
1 to 1:50 p.m. February 3, Magee-O’Connor Theater in Andorfer Commons
Students, staff, faculty and members of the community will gather to read works from their favorite African-American authors.
- Conversations Never Had
6:30 to 8:30 p.m. February 8, Seitz Conference Center in Andorfer Commons
Participants will discuss the challenges faced by African-American men and women at Indiana Tech, in the Fort Wayne community, and in our home communities. Participants will also work together to develop strategies and motivation for overcoming those challenges. The discussion will be facilitated by Dr. Ruby Cain and E. Scott Smiley.
- Untold History: A Living Exhibit of Significant African-American Historical Figures
Noon to 2 p.m. February 17, Recreation Center in Andorfer Commons
Students will transform, in costume and voice, into historical figures from African-American history. Each student will tell an often-neglected story from America’s past.
- Spoken Word Event
7 p.m. Thursday February 24, Recreation Center in Andorfer Commons
The celebration of Black History Month wraps up with a tribute to all of those who have come before us. Students and community members will read their own tributes to important African-Americans in their own lives, or in our history. Coffee and pastries will be served, and everyone who speaks will receive a Black History Month T-shirt.
The events are being organized by Indiana Tech student Aurea Shelton and are funded by a grant from Indiana Tech’s Committee on Retaining Enrollment (CORE). CORE awards $500 grants on a competitive basis to students, faculty and staff who design activities dedicated to student engagement.
