Warriors Win WHAC Baseball Tournament
The Indiana Tech Warriors swept through the 2009 WHAC Baseball Tournament with a perfect 3-0 record and claimed the tournament championship. In the first round, the second-seed Warriors used a five-run eighth inning to defeat the Aquinas Saints 10-8. In the second round Tech took advantage of some errors to score runs at will and won easily 11-2 over Concordia.
The third game pitted the Warriors against tournament favorite Madonna Crusaders. Despite spotting the Crusaders four runs in the first inning, the Warriors roared back and scored 10 unanswered runs en route to the win and the automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament Leading the offensive assault were junior Lance Hanmer (Greenburg, IN/Parkland CC) going 2-4 with two runs, two RBI and one home run. Gordon Murphy (Fort Wayne, IN/Centenary College) smacked his third home run of the season and collected three RBI on the day. Senior Steve Weigle (Naples, FL/Owens CC) went 3-4 with a double and two runs. In addition, sophomore pitcher Corey Schwartz (Decatur, IN/Bellmont) pitched six innings for the win, and reliever Zach Brown (Indianapolis, IN/Shawnee CC) pitched the final three for the save.
