College of Professional Studies: Degree Programs: Undergraduate

Health Information Technology, Associate of Science

Health information technology (HIT) supports patient care by providing data to medical staff at the point of care and by giving administrative support in areas such as finance and practice management. This field is ideal for individuals who wish to work in the dynamic healthcare industry but not directly in patient care.

Federal regulations that require the use of electronic health records are expected to create tens of thousands of jobs in health information technology within the next three years. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act allocated $38 billion to computerize patient records by 2015.

Highly trained professionals are needed to develop, implement, maintain, and use information systems in healthcare. Graduates of the associate degree program may find employment in settings such as hospitals, physician networks and practice groups, third-party payers, regulatory agencies, and industry suppliers such as pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology companies, and vendors of hospital equipment and medical supplies.

The coursework that you will complete throughout your degree program has been designed to include the subjects and important healthcare issue knowledge that employers want you to have. In addition, the coursework has been carefully developed to include the subjects that you will need to become certified as a Registered Health Information Technician.
