Federal law and the Department of Education require that students receiving financial aid make Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) toward their degree. This law was implemented to ensure that students who receive federal financial aid are making measurable progress toward their degree, within a reasonable amount of time. The following guidelines have been established and will be recognized in compliance of federal law and Department of Education regulation.

Evaluation

Indiana Tech will evaluate a student’s progress at the end of each semester. During evaluation, the following criteria will be reviewed: grade level (freshman, sophomore, junior or senior); career GPA; attempted credit hours and earned credit hours. Three separate conditions must be met to make SAP and to continue to receive aid. First, students must earn at least 61 percent of the credit hours attempted. Accepted transfer credits are included in the calculation of credit hours earned/attempted. Second, the student may not take more than 150% of the credit hours needed to complete their degree. Lastly, the following GPA guidelines have been established by Indiana Tech and are outlined in the current student catalog.

Failure to meet Academic Progress

Students failing to meet SAP standards at the end of an evaluation period will be placed on Financial Aid Warning. On Financial Aid Warning, the following will occur: student will be notified via U.S. Mail and/or email of their status. No action is required of the student. Aid may be posted for the subsequent semester.

Students failing to meet SAP standards at the end of a Financial Aid Warning period will be placed on Financial Aid Probation. On Financial Aid Probation, the following will occur: student will be notified via U.S. Mail and/or email of their status. Student must file an appeal to review financial aid probation and the appeal must be approved by the Satisfactory Academic Progress Committee before any aid may be posted for the subsequent semester. If the appeal is approved, aid may be posted. If the appeal is denied, aid will not be posted.

Students not meeting SAP standards at the end of an approved Financial Aid Probation period may be placed on a personalized academic plan. Continued eligibility for financial aid may be granted only if the student successfully follows the established academic plan. If the student fails to successfully follow the academic plan, further aid will be denied until SAP standards are met.
