Greetings and Welcome to Indiana Tech!
As our 2011-2012 academic year comes to a close, the aromas of spring and cut grass are yet another reminder that we will be sending off close to 600 Indiana Tech graduates to continue to grow and prosper.
Our 91st Commencement will be held at the Memorial Coliseum on Saturday, May 19, beginning at 10:30 a.m. It will be an honor and my pleasure to welcome Bernardo Quintana, chairman and former CEO of Mexico’s largest engineering and construction company, Empresas ICA. He also is chairman of the board of Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte, which operates 13 international airports in Mexico in alliance with Aeroports de Paris.
Our graduates will be working in a global economy ever expanding and complex. We are fortunate to have someone as internationally successful as Mr. Quintana as our guest speaker. His international expertise is particularly fitting this year because Indiana Tech will confer its first Ph.D. in Global Leadership at the May ceremony. The ceremony also will honor students who have earned associate, bachelor’s, master’s degrees at one of Indiana Tech’s 13 locations or online.
In addition to Commencement, each spring brings many opportunities to honor our students for their achievements. My calendar is happily filled with events such as a lunch honoring students who have excelled in their field of study or been chosen for Who’s Who; the induction ceremony for Alpha Chi honor society; and the celebration of the winners of our Outstanding Graduates awards. A new event was added this year when Indiana Tech established a chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society. At the inaugural induction ceremony, 80 student-athletes who have lettered in a sport and achieved a 3.4 or higher GPA were welcomed to the group.
Even as we look back and celebrate the accomplishments of our students this year, there is much to be excited about in our future. At our main campus in Fort Wayne, work is progressing rapidly on construction of Warrior Row C, our newest residence hall. With the continued growth in our enrollment, we are likely to need more! Our enrollment is also growing beyond Fort Wayne with more students taking online courses and a second out-of-state campus scheduled to open in Covington, Ky., this summer.
Our law school has initial staff in place, recruiting prospective law students to begin classes in the fall of 2013. The law school building construction will begin very soon, and you will see an amazing addition to our campus just west of the Warrior Athletic Center.
With so much going on at Indiana Tech, surely this is the place to be. If you haven’t visited in a while, please stop in and say, “Hello.” We’d love to see you and share more news.
