Get to know Coach Edgar

Doug Edgar is in his second year as the head track and field coach at Indiana Tech. He spent the previous two seasons as the assistant coach where he worked with the sprinters, jumpers, and hurdlers. Coach Edgar is USATF level 2 certified in the sprints, hurdles, relays.

During Edgar’s three years at Indiana Tech the sprint program has become one of the best in the nation. Coach Edgar has coached 21 individual and 7 relay NAIA All Americans, over 100 national qualifier, multiple NAIA scholar athletes, and 48 WHAC conference champions. During his first year as head coach the Women’s team won both the indoor and outdoor WHAC Conference Championships. The Men’s team finished as runner up at both the indoor and outdoor conference championships. For the teams effort coach Edgar was named both the indoor and outdoor WHAC conference coach of the year. The Women’s team would continue to thrive at Nationals finishing in 6th place at both the indoor and outdoor National Championship and scoring a school record 46.5 points at the outdoor Championship. He also coached his first National Champion this past season, as he helped guide the women’s 4 x 100 relay to a victory.

Coach Edgar on this year’s team:

"Last year was a learning experience for everyone. I feel our team really came together and started working as a group, instead of a bunch of individuals. We had an amazing season last year, but now it is time to take the next step. We want to improve on our women’s top 6 finish and want to be able to contend for the National Championship. Our Men are so close to winning conference and we have a great group of incoming recruits to help us reach that goal. We are still a very young team and will rely heavily on our seniors; Zac Chapman, Matt Kimbrell, Tiffany Aikin, Veronica Jersey, and Domi Elizondo. We will need to have great leadership from this group if we are going to reach our goals. We have an amazing staff in place, return all 26 of our All Americans from last season, and the best incoming class of athletes the program has seen to date. We have a lot of potential as a group and have a great chance to set the foundation for a long run as a dominant program.”

Previous to Indiana Tech, Doug Edgar started his coaching career at Concordia Lutheran High School. He spent the next three seasons at Muncie South High School as the cross country and track coach. While at Muncie South he helped guide the Rebels to the first regional cross country championship in school history. Additionally, on the track he helped lead his team to back-to-back sectional championships for the first time in school history. During his time at Muncie South he coached state qualifiers in the 4 x 200, 4 x 400, 55 meter dash, 100 meter dash, high jump, and long jump.

In his athletic career Coach Edgar was a three-time All-State runner at Concordia Lutheran High School. He currently still owns the school record as part of the sprint medley and 4 x 400 relay teams. Edgar was also a two-time qualifier as part of the 3200 meter relay team. He went on to attend Anderson University where he was a HCAC conference champion as part of the 4 x 400 meter relay and individually was runner-up in the open 400.

Coach Edgar currently lives in Fort Wayne with his wife Samantha and daughter Addyson.
