Distance Learning Policies

Homework Assignments

Assignments should be forwarded to the Director of Distance Learning. Assignments should be done sequentially and sent in one at a time. Instructors will grade and evaluate the assignments and arrange to have them mailed back to the student within three weeks.

Exam Request Forms

Use the official Exam Request forms provided in the MAP you receive with your books. They facilitate the flow of work through the College of Professional Studies office and to the faculty. Exam requests may be faxed, but please do not fax completed, proctored tests. Students may request one test at a time. These exams will be sent to the student's designated proctor.  Some exams do not require a proctor and are part of the MAP you receive.  These exams are take-home and will be included in your MAP along with cover sheets to submit.  Please submit these to the address or fax number on the coversheet included.

Withdrawal and Switch Policies

Students in the Distance Learning Program will receive a 100 percent refund if they withdraw within 10 days after their registration. If a student withdraws 11 to 30 days after registration, he or she will receive a 50 percent refund. Students may switch from the Distance Learning Program to the Accelerated Degree Program within 90 days of their initial start date. Withdrawals with record (W) are allowed from 11 to 90 days after registration. Students must notify the College of Professional Studies office in writing to withdraw. If a student has not asked to be withdrawn from a course within 90 days of initial registration, a grade will be issued based on work completed in the Independent Study Program.

Students taking an Accelerated Degree course may switch into the same course in the Distance Learning Program no later than the third week of a five-week class and the fifth week of a 10-week class. A student cannot switch from ADP to the Distance Learning Program if he or she is failing the course. The cost to switch into an Distance Learning course is $50. Only one switch is permitted for each class.

Students taking a Distance Learning course may switch into an Accelerated Degree course no later than three months past the start date of the Distance Learning course, contingent on the course being available.  Both the Petition to Switch form and fee must be submitted to the Director of Distance Learning.

Academic Credit Load

A student may register for up to two courses in the Distance Learning Program. If the student completes both courses within the six-month time allotment, he or she may receive permission from the Director of Independent Study to take three courses simultaneously.

Distance Learning Proctor Information

Students in the Distance Learning Program must abide by the procedures regarding proctors.  Students who live near an Indiana Tech campus must take exams at Indiana Tech.  Students need to send in their exam request form, then contact the campus local to them to schedule an appointment to take the exam.  If a student is not close to an Indiana Tech campus, he or she needs to identify at least one responsible person to act as a proctor for the exams.  Exams must be taken at educational institutions (colleges or high schools),  a local library or at the proctor's or student's place of employment. The exams cannot be given at the proctor's or student's home.

Proctors are not required for all of the courses.  When you receive your materials, it will indicate whether the exams are take-home or must be proctored.

Proctors can be:

  • An instructor, professor, or guidance counselor
  • A H.R. manager/training coordinator at your place of business
  • A librarian/assistant librarian
  • A military educational officer
  • An education/testing coordinator
  • Any other individual may be used only with the approval of the department chair

The procedures for the exams will be:

  • Ask one person to act as your proctor and get his or her agreement.
  • Have your prospective proctor complete the online proctor form.
  • Upon receipt of this form, it will be forwarded to the Director of Distance Learning for approval.
  • Once the proctor is approved, you will be notified and may begin requesting exams.
  • The examination will be sent to the proctor along with any instructions as to time limits or resource materials to be used, if any.
  • When you are ready to take the test, schedule a testing period with your proctor.
  • The proctor will administer the exam.
  • Upon completion of the exam, the proctor will send the completed exam back to the College of Professional Studies office in the envelope provided.
  • The College of Professional Studies office will forward the exam to the faculty mentor for the course for evaluation.
  • When the exam is graded, the exam request form will be returned to the student showing the grade and any comments from the instructor.
  • The exams must be taken in sequence.

It is not necessary to wait for a previous test's results before requesting the next exam; however, it is our policy to hold any exam request until we have received the previous test.
