Movie in the Magee: Higher Learning
In John Singleton’s powerful portrait of college life in the 1990s, a group of incoming freshmen at Columbus University—including varsity athlete Malik Williams (Omar Epps), awkward outcast Remy, and wide-eyed Kristen Connor—struggle to find themselves and adjust to newfound independence. When Remy finds acceptance among a group of neo-Nazis, tensions rise even higher on a campus already divided along racial, socioeconomic and gender lines.
Join us as we conclude Black History month with a showing of “Higher Learning”. This 1990’s film examines many issues that are still far too relevant today—the rise of white nationalism among young men, the pervasiveness of rape culture, school shootings, racist policing policies, the high price of a university education, binge drinking, sexual fluidity and the treatment of minority athletes in college athletics.
