OLHE7008 is a three-hour course and can be substituted for any course within a student’s concentration core. While Ph.D. students are welcome to participate in as many global practicums as they would like, OLHE7008 can only be taken twice for a total of six credits. Students must complete at least nine program hours before they can be approved for global practicum credit.
A GP requires 135 hours of learning experience (takes place inside and outside the classroom). Examples of experiences include face-to-face interactions with a professor and classmates on the trip, pilot study activities at an international site, information search before the trip, readings, assignments, etc. Leisure travel time that might take place as part of OLHE7008 should not be factored into course work hours. Global practicums can be taken as a group or as an individual.
GROUP
A group class has a designed curriculum and a class agenda. The class involves an international trip that includes an academic component (e.g., ILA conference, IB regional conference, international workshop) and a global mindset development component.
INDIVIDUAL
Goals, learning objectives, readings, and deliverables for the individual class are discussed with the course professor prior to the start of the class. An individual GP has required activities as well as provides flexibility for a student to design unique academic activities to meet identified learning objectives. An individual global practicum class must be approved by the director of Ph.D. program at least four weeks prior to the class’ start date.
