AI in Everyday Life

This module discusses how you can use various types of AIs in your everyday life, and how to protect your privacy and security while using AI.

Introduction to AI

AI stands for Artificial Intelligence. It can be used for a wide variety of things, including virtual assistants (like Siri on the iPhone), enhancing customer service (like on amazon, by giving buyers recommendations), improving search engines, and automating tasks.

How do we use AI?

  • You can ask ChatGPT, or other AI, to answer complex questions for you.
    • You can ask it anything, like writing an email for you, giving you game ideas for quality time with family, or even the best hiking spots in each area.
  • On amazon, AI can give buyers recommendations of similar products based on things they have previously searched or bought.
  • Netflix also uses AI to give users recommendations on other shows or movies they would enjoy based on their watching history.
  • Siri or Alexa use AI to better understand the questions being asked of them and provide human-like responses.

Remember that AI is a tool, not a solution

  • Use AI for help solving problems or doing other tasks, but remember, AI is not to be fully trusted or depended on.

Smart Devices and Assistive Technology

Voice Assistants

  • Like Siri, Alexa, the Google Assistant; they can help you with questions like how to edit a document or if you can give certain foods to a pet.
  • They act as a streamlined search engine, using voice commands.
  • These assistants can also help navigate technology without clicking on any buttons, helping people to play certain songs, or go to certain apps.

Health Devices

  • Some health devices like wearable watches or necklaces use AI to assist in everyday life
  • They can help alert if there has been a fall, to call the necessary authorities or contacts
  • They can give detailed health data, like heartbeats per minute, or the number of steps per day
  • AI is also used for appointment reminders, medication alerts, or medication interactions

Everyday Tasks

AI is used in photo organization on the photos app on your smartphone.

  • It categorizes people based on their faces into folders for easy discovery or categorizes photos from a specific place into a folder

Google or Apple maps uses AI to give users realistic previews of places, recommendations, and real-time traffic updates.

Smart homes also use AI.

  • Smart homes use internet-connected devices, like lights or thermostats, to make managing the household easier
  • AI can assist in these smart home devices learning user patterns, like turning the lights on or off at a specific time of day, assisting in security with facial recognition, and helping to personalize the experience

Safety & Privacy Online

AI is used all over the internet to help keep users safe.

  • It assists in automating data security and provides real-time alerts to any potential threats, limiting data breaches.

AI is present on many messaging apps, helping to alert users to any potential scams.

AI Can Improve your Life

AI helps everyone to obtain access to information that they may not have understood or had access to before.

It helps to simplify everyday tasks, like looking for a movie or song, through personalized recommendations.

Communication assistance is another perk of AI, as it can make writing texts or emails faster through predictive text; and it can also translate in real time, making conversations with people that don’t speak a common language easier.

AI usage in fitness trackers can give workout recommendations and monitor health metrics to give personalized alerts.
