Jaylon Smith shares lessons in leadership, perseverance during First Wednesdays event
October 8, 2026Fort Wayne native and former NFL linebacker Jaylon Smith returned to his hometown on Wednesday, Oct. 7, to share lessons in leadership and perseverance with Indiana Tech students.
The former Pro Bowler was the featured speaker for the College of Business’ First Wednesdays Speaker Series. His presentation, “Navigate IT: The Next Play: Leadership Skills for an Evolving Future,” focused on overcoming obstacles and developing the necessary skills to make an impact beyond one’s chosen profession.
Smith shined locally as a linebacker and running back, leading Bishop Luers High School to four consecutive Indiana Class 2A state titles and being crowned Indiana Mr. Football after the 2012 season. He went on to star at Notre Dame, before being drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in 2016 and playing seven seasons in the NFL. He is currently serving as North Side High School’s interim football coach while focusing on investing in and giving back to his hometown.
Smith encouraged students to think about how their own talents and careers can create value, offered advice and recommendations to students interested in a future in business, and reminded athletes to plan ahead for life after sports as everyone has an “expiration date.” He also talked about the importance of giving back to one’s community and shared his desire to be a positive presence in Fort Wayne.
The First Wednesdays Speaker Series brings experienced business and community leaders to Indiana Tech, giving students and members of the community opportunities to learn from their experiences, hear the lessons they have gained throughout their careers and build connections that can support their own professional growth.
